Mesothelioma Treatment: What Can I Do?
Similar to other types of cancer, malignant mesothelioma has no cure. It is true that doctors and scientist alike have made treatments and are currently making improvements, but none of those have been 100% effective in curing malignant mesothelioma. There is no such thing as the “best way” in removing a cancer cell.
Even though there is no cure for cancer, oncologists and other professions in the health field have made numerous treatments that could be used to save the life of a patient with malignant mesothelioma. These treatments are conventional treatments done by oncologists namely: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. All of which will be discussed briefly in this article.
Mesothelioma Treatment Choices
Surgery is the frequent method of choice in treating cancer cells. Surgery is done to diagnose and treat cancerous areas especially if it is diagnosed early. As a form of diagnosis, biopsies or imaging scans are frequently being used in order to detect if the cell is cancerous or not or to detect what level of cancer it is already. As a form of treatment, surgery is being done as a palliative care in order to relive pain and pressure or as a treatment/cure (relative chance of success) when the surgeon aims to partially/completely remove the malignancy. Surgical procedures for malignant mesothelioma are usually done in the chest and the abdomen with the names ending in –ectomy or –otomy like lobectomy, thoracostomy and the like.
Chemotherapy as a form of treatment involves the use of drugs or chemicals as the method of therapy. These types of drugs are chemically designed to destroy fast producing or fast replicating cells. Anti cancer drugs are not allowed for pregnant persons because it will kill or cause harm to the baby. Common side effects of using anti cancer drugs would be loss of hair, pain, dry mouth and others. Chemotherapy may be done either orally or through injections depending on the case of the patient. For malignant mesothelioma, chemotherapy is usually conducted through injections.
Which form of Mesothelioma Treatment Is Right For You?
Radiation as a form of treatment involves the use of radioactive materials that could either be done externally (through shooting radioactive beams like alpha, beta, x –rays and others) or internally (through brachytherapy where in radioactive implants are placed inside the human body). Radioactive therapy aims to destroy fast replicating cells similar to chemotherapy in the sense that radioactive therapy is a more direct approach.
Most of the time, the three mesothelioma treatments are usually being done all at the same time to ensure a higher probability of survival. The mode and the frequency of the treatment are dependent on the diagnosis of your trusted oncologist.
Alternative Mesothelioma Treatments
Aside from the conventional methods stated above, most doctors are using alternative treatments in order to soothe the need of the patient. Some patient requires supplementary therapy like moxibustion, acupuncture, acupressure and the like. All of which are dependent on the clients culture. Some doctors are also conducting experimental treatments in order to identify the “best way” of curing or treating cancer cells.
In conclusion, even though there is no cure for this malignant condition, various modes of mesothelioma treatments are available to make a patient’s life better. Being able to diagnose and treat the disease early provides a higher rate of survival compared to other patients who were diagnosed late.
